Coming Soon--

I know it won't be done by tomorrow but this piece will be inked, colored, and on the May blog header soon enough!

And with any luck it will be somewhere in the new OilCan Drive book that will be available on Amazon.com later this summer.

Good things are coming soon!

Sports Illustrated Kids April

As I begin drawing the next round of illustrations for the Sports Illustrated Kids "What's the Call?" article I thought it would be a perfect time to show off the illustrations I did for the April issue, which should be out in stores as we speak.

I always love doing these illustrations and I look forward to getting the new scenarios every month. I'm always surprised and I am never bored since I'm always asked to draw all sorts of different kinds of sports and situations.

This month features baseball, golf, and lacrosse. Lacrosse! Never in my days at art school did I ever think I'd have to draw a couple of guys playing lacrosse. But, here we are and there ya go.

Enjoy the new illustrations, go out and pick up the April issue of SIK, and have a great weekend!

I'll see you all soon!

OilCan Drive

Well I've finally hit that point with OilCan Drive, my weekly updated web comic that I've been doing for the last few years. I've finally hit the point where I have no more buffer and was up until 3am on Thursday night getting the page that needed to be posted on Friday morning done.

I do love doing this comic and telling this story but there have been a few things going against me these past few weeks. One, a lot of client work suddenly fell into my lap and I have regularly been juggling about three jobs at once trying to get everything done and sent to everyone on time. So far I haven't missed a deadline but I can feel it starting to wear on me a bit. Second, this second issue of OilCan Drive features a lot of characters on each page. It isn't a simple "two people sit down and talk to each other for a few pages" kind of comic anymore. These last batch of pages for the comic have had a minimum of fourteen or so characters all doing something on the same page. Sean the artist feels like wringing Sean the writer's neck for putting all these people into one place at the same time. But, Sean the artist just grits his teeth and keeps penciling and inking away. It's just taking him more time to do a page than usual.

This weekend I once again find myself juggling three different client jobs and I am a bit scared that the thing that will fall by the wayside will be the week's OilCan Drive page. I have a plan to get the next page done but I do think, at some point, I am going to hit that week where I'll miss posting a page.

Now, I know the world won't end and, really, not that many people will care but it feels important to me. So, we'll see how it goes.

For now, it's back to work for me. So much to do, so little time...

20 Years Ago Today--

Kurt Cobain took his own life.

I miss him as an artist and will always wonder what he might have accomplished had he gotten through that particularly hard time in his life. I wonder what he could have done with all the technology that is at our fingertips and wonder what he might have done if he was able to get his music directly to listeners like so many musicians these days take for granted. I still listen to Nirvana on a regular basis and Kurt is a huge influence on the music I do for OilCan Drive.

And I still remember where I was twenty years ago when I heard the news that a body had been found in his home.

Kurt, you are still missed...

2014 Denver Anomaly Convention

Monika and I headed down to Denver last weekend to set up an OilCan Drive table and attend the annual Denver Anomaly Con held in the Denver Tech Center.

I was originally approached by the show runner of the convention at last year's Denver Comic Con and was offered a table if I would sit on a few panels and share some of my thoughts. While the convention wasn't nearly as busy as the Denver Comic Con (and, honestly, few cons are now as busy as the Denver Comic Con) it went really well, we met some new friends, and hopefully made some new fans.

The biggest problem for me was actually waking up when normal people wake up and commuting somewhere for a few days. Working from a home studio has definitely spoiled me and you can't beat the commute or office hours I have. But, even though I'm not used to it, I wasn't late for anything and everything went great.

Monika had fun dressing up as Lily from the OilCan Drive comic book and brought a bunch of people over to the table. She looked too cute every day of the weekend and had fun the whole time.

The best part of the convention was all the costumed people wandering by. The Anomaly Con caters mostly to the steampunk crowd and, let me tell you, those people LOVE dressing up. So, for them to have a whole weekend where they could let their imagination run wild was really fun to see. We got to see a bunch of great costumes.

It was a great weekend. I got to do something different, I got to talk about my book to new people, and I got to meet a bunch of new friends. And you can't beat that.

Now I am back in the studio catching up on work and penciling and inking the newest OilCan Drive pages. But, don't worry, it won't be too long until I bring the project out into the world again.

For now, here are a few other pictures from the convention. Enjoy and I'll talk to you all soon!

Happy April!

Okay, so it's a day late and a dollar short but that's pretty much the way I've been feeling these last few weeks. So, hopefully one day late won't bother anyone as I say Happy April!

I decided to use the Mr. Mucho piece I did a few weeks back for this month's blog header. It just seemed too good a piece not to use.

These last few weeks have been busy but, at the same time, I feel like I never really get anything done. There is always something more to do, something else I need to work on, and nothing ever seems like it's complete. Plus, I never feel like I have an actual day off so I really don't know what is going on.

Right now I'm still doing pages for the weekly OilCan Drive comic, doing freelance work for a few clients, and I just finished doing a convention appearance this weekend in Denver at the annual Anomaly Steampunk Convention. I will post some pictures from the convention and talk a bit more about it tomorrow.

So, it's been busy but hopefully I'll figure it all out soon.

But, for now, Happy April!
