From The Vault - Jeff Lafferty Project Inks 1999

I'm not sure of the exact story behind these pieces or how they came to be. But here's how I remember it.

From what I recall my friend, Jeff Lafferty, had been commissioned to do a short comic book story for some company or another. After starting it there was some discussion about if I would help him out on the project. Maybe just do inking on the project, maybe do full finishes, I don't remember.

But, the story was about a young sorceress/magician/witch who had a small dragon as a pet. Sounded simple enough.

So, I did these pieces to see how mine and Jeff's styles would mix.

I think these pieces weren't actually me inking over Jeff's work but me tracing over his drawings, giving a touch of my own style to them, and then inking away. I say that only because while I can see Jeff's style in there I also see a lot of my own.

I'm not sure what ultimately became of the project but I do know these were the only two pieces I did.

Jeff now has an excellent website where he does commissioned sketch cards and prints. It's really amazing stuff and it makes me wonder why he ever let me ink this stuff in the first place. As you can see, the guy kicks a whole lot of ass all by himself. And, the most amazing thing about his new work is that he paints the cards, which are about 2.5"x3.5", at ACTUAL SIZE!!! How he gets that much detail into such a small space is still beyond me. But, it's really great stuff. You can check it out for yourself HERE.

So, while these are the only two pieces we did together I think our styles mesh really well. If they didn't this piece wouldn't have caught my eye as I was flipping through my portfolio for Friday's Vault. So, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Cool man, I forgot all about this stuff.

I think they actually came out really good and even though we’ve both moved off in our own directions and will probably never collaborate again. I think we could of done a great book together.
